Allure Salon has been in downtown Mountain View since 2003. That says a lot. You have to be good to stay in business in this community for over a decade! Mediocre establishments get swallowed up around here and only the best survive, especially in the downtown area.
I’ve gone to Allure for haircuts and manicures, but never hair color. Until now. I went this week and changed my hair color from a red that I did myself at home to a beautiful mixture of browns, blonde and copper. The technique that Evelyn, the hair designer that did my hair, used is called “balayage.” It’s a French word and it means to paint the color on. It’s much more creative and Evelyn is an expert at it. She’s been working at Allure for 2 years and was previously at the Fairmont Salon. I asked her what she specializes in and she told me it was balayage. Lucky me. I love that she was real quiet while she was working on it; like she was so busy concentrating that she couldn't make small talk. Fine with me!
She painted on 4 colors, very slowly and explained that she was going slow because it takes a bit of extra effort to cover the cheap boxed red hair color that I had used. Okay, she didn’t use the word cheap, but I was really feeling guilty about doing such a cheesy job all this time. It took over 4 hours, and my hair is in better condition now than when I went in and I love it! It’s hard to actually say what color it is because it’s so many different colors blended together.
I brought in a photo of Jennifer Lawrence (I'm a little embarrassed to show everyone that I wanted to look like Katniss, but we all know she's adorable and who wouldn't want to look like her) with short blonde hair and showed Evelyn to see if she could give me something similar and I ‘m really happy with the results. I’m not going back to that boxed stuff from CVS. I swear! Getting it professionally done is totally worth the time and money.
Oddly enough, I rather enjoyed the time that I was in the salon. The employees at Allure are all so professional and help each other out when one has a few extra minutes and someone else needs a hand. They all look like cool salon staff… you know what I mean. The owner, Alisa Barnhart was always calmly doing client’s hair right next to her staff. I guess, what I’m trying to say is that it is a totally and completely drama-free hair salon, and I like that.
I try to do as much business as I can with places that are active members of our community, not just located here. I want to spend my dollar someplace that actually gives back and participates. I’ve been to a few community events at Allure and I know that they’re connected and well respected. Thank you Evelyn for doing such an amazing job on my hair. I’ll be back. Allure is at 888 Villa Street, one block from Castro Street. I love Mountain View.
