FuEL SV is a new networking group for young professionals. It’s a partnership of Sunnyvale, Los Altos and Mountain View Chambers. FuEL SV plans to hold joint events with neighboring young professionals programs in other cities.
The official launch party for FuEL SV (Future Emerging Leaders of Silicon Valley) was at OPAL Nightclub. Talk about a great venue for kicking off a new organization! The group of young professionals will have monthly happy hours at local restaurants and other businesses. Not only will you get to meet lots of new people, but you’ll also get to check out businesses that you probably haven't experienced yet. That's one of the goals of the Chamber of Commerce, you know, to show you all the fun, new places in town.
I tried to work the room and get as many people as I could to tell me where they work or what they hoped to get out of attending. That was a fun assignment and I’ll definitely do it again. I met a teacher who was tired of match.com and speed dating events. There was a friendly Apple employee (Hi Mark), a Mountain View sustainability expert, several founders of local companies, someone who works with the homeless population in Sunnyvale, a social media expert, an interior design specialist, and then I think I forgot about the assignment I had given myself, and I started to relax and enjoy the lemon drops.
But still, that’s enough research to show you that it was an interesting crowd. Definitely, bring plenty of business cards. I like that the motive for networking was both for personal and business reasons. We all want to do business with people that we like enough to see outside of the office, right?
FuEL SV is an industry agnostic networking group that is not membership based. Just register and show up. Most people attending were 40 and under, since it’s being promoted as networking for “emerging professionals.”
Unlike most Chamber events, there won’t be any official announcements made at FuEL SV gatherings. If you enjoy the event and have questions about the benefits Chamber membership, someone from the Mountain View Chamber of Commerce will be available to answer your questions.
I go to lots of networking events, since I’m part of the Chamber, and I had more fun at this one than I have in a long time. Honestly, it was because there were so many new people. It was a different crowd than the usual group. Not that there’s anything wrong with the usual crowd, but new people are new. And exciting.
FuEL SV is going to be really popular and it’s fun to get in on a new networking organization right in the beginning. To find out about upcoming FuEL SV networking events check out Meetup and/or sign up for the enewsletter that the Chamber sends out. FuEL SV will eventually have a nice website, and here's the address, but as I write this, it's not quite ready yet. That's okay. See you at the next FuEL SV event. I’m in!
