I always hesitate to say that a restaurant is “my favorite” because competition in this area is so tough that places don’t always stay open for very long. I’m can tell you that I’m comfortable saying that Asian Box is my new favorite. The food is fresh, healthy and clean, just the way I like it.
They’re a small start-up that was started by 3 people. The Mountain View location has been here for a year (that’s quite an accomplishment), Palo Alto for 2 years and they just opened their 3rd location, which is in San Francisco. Start-ups aren’t always about technology, apps, or search engines. Sometimes start-ups are about amazing Vietnamese food. The Asian Box recipes are all created by their executive chef, Gracie. She visits each of the 3 locations every week to be sure that the flavors of the products are consistent.
Everything is made from scratch. There are no freezers in any of the stores. Everything is purchased as locally as possible. All of the tofu is organic and made in Berkeley.
I must admit that I almost always order the same thing, the “Workout.” I especially like it when Michelle, the manager, hands me my box she always says, “Enjoy your Workout.”
I asked what the #1 item of the menu is and they told me that it’s the “Five Spice Chicken with brown rice.” The Vietnamese iced tea goes perfectly with my workout
Although I usually go to Asian Box for lunch, they are gaining popularity in the dinner hour. They have dinner specials in the evening. It’s relatively inexpensive for dinner compared to most of Castro Street.
At lunchtime I just grab it and go back to my office to work. I know… I should probably start taking my box to the park and enjoying this beautiful summer-in the-middle-of-winter weather.
Asian Box offers catering and I think I’ll mention that the next time someone asks me where they can order lunch for 500 people. Okay, I’m not asked that very often, but Asian Box can handle it if the need ever arises. Their catering is family style, as opposed to the individual boxes that you get in the restaurant.
I love places that are locally based, affordable, and promote a healthy lifestyle. Asian Box fits right in and I wish them many years of success in Mountain View.
