I heard about some new commuter bikes that are really good quality (built by Specialized) but don’t look all flashy. The bikes that look all flashy scream “Steal Me!” when their owners aren’t with them and the more understated bikes simply blend in with the crowd of bikes at the train station. This is a brilliant idea that Specialized had—make a bike that looks rather generic and plain, but that people would want because they’re so familiar with the brand name. These bikes are called Globe. They look rather sturdy and super functional. Some of them come with fenders and a basket or rack on the back so they’re perfect for errands and shopping around town. I looked at the Globe bikes at Cognition Cyclery on Castro Street. They have them in the front window. Cognition is different from the other big bike stores in this area. At Cognition they specialize in Specialized (including Globe) and Felt bikes. Those are the only brands of bikes that they carry and they know those lines inside and out. They opened last April. It’s important for Mountain View residents to support locally owned business. Not only is Cognition totally local, but Specialized Bicycle is based in Morgan Hill. How cool is that!
