I attended my first drum circle last weekend. It was at East West Bookstore on Castro Street. I’ve gone to quite a few different events at East West over the years, but this was my first experience with a drum. I had never even touched a drum before I sat down to play with 70 other people. The drum circle was actually 2 or 3 people deep and the circle facilitator stood in the center and led the group. His name is David Dilullo and this is a link to his website. It has a good video of him in action. Yes, I took my own video while I was at the event, but the lights were turned down really low and my video is completely black. Check out his website to see what a drum circle looks like and how happy everyone is that participates.
David brought tons of drums for people to borrow for the evening, so it didn’t matter that I don’t own one. My friends each had their own. They’re experience drummers and I’m pretty sure they’re trying to get me hooked.
I was surprised that all the drums are so different from each other, tall, short, fat, stand on the floor, hold on your lap, everything. I don’t know the names of the different types of drums, I’m sure you could find someone to give you good drum advice if you really wanted to know more. Plenty of loaner drums were available, as well as other percussion instruments for people to experiment with.
It doesn’t matter how experienced you are at playing an instrument, or whether or not you think you have any musical ability. It’s really fun and everyone around you is having a great time, so there’s no way that it doesn’t rub off on you. The group included people of all ages. I walked in not knowing what to expect, a little nervous about my lack of experience, and ended up having a great time!
These events at East West Bookstore are very popular and sell out early, so keep an eye on their events calendar if you’re interested in attending. Drum Circles only happen once a quarter at East West, although I did notice an upcoming drum concert and a drum workshop. Please check their events calendar. I love Mountain View.
