How do I love thee? Let me count the ways… There are so many fabulous services that our library offers Mountain View residents. Are you as well-acquainted with it as you should be? Come in from the cold and hang out in your favorite corner of the library for a while. I thought it would be fun to mention my favorite things about the Mountain View Public Library and then have you comment on what you like so much about it.
The first place I always stop is the “Friends of the Library” collection. This is a special collection of the very latest books hot-off-the-press. You can check them out for 7 days and you can renew that check-out period once. The longest you can borrow these books is 2 weeks. These are the titles that everyone is talking about on Twitter and Facebook and you if really want to be up on things—this is the place to go. Right next to the Friends collection is the “What’s New” area and it also has the most recent books in all different categories.
I love the Graphic Novel area in the Teen Zone. No, you don’t have to be a teen to enjoy graphic novels. This area includes a very large Manga collection. The modern manga comic books (a Japanese style comic that has been around since the 1950s) are translated into English. The artwork is fabulous and puts the old Archie and Veronica Comics to shame. You do have to be a teen to hang out in the Teen Zone, but anyone can go into that area to browse the books.
I studied for endless hours in the “Group Study Rooms” with some of my classmates when I was a college student. There are three of these rooms and you need to ask a librarian to open one of them for you. Your group can work on projects together without having to speak in your library-voice. Burritos are not allowed in the Study Rooms… or anyplace in the library for that matter. Don’t even try to sneak one in. You will be asked to leave. Trust me.
When I wasn’t working on projects with a group of students, I spent many hours reading in the “Quiet Area” that overlooks Pioneer Park. This particular room is the most peaceful place in all of Mountain View. No electronic devices are allowed and everyone is quietly reading or enjoying the view of the park. Yes, occasionally you may hear snoring, but it just adds to the ambiance. Right around the corner is an extensive collection of magazines and newspapers.
And finally, my favorite thing about our library is that there are so many desk areas right next windows. You can sit and do homework, use your laptop, work on your novel, or research any imaginable subject while looking out the window at beautiful downtown Mountain View. I just love this place…
