Mountain View Trees is a volunteer based community organization that was founded in 2006. They plant trees, teach others how to plant trees and encourage lots of tree planting in our community. I went to one of their planting events on Saturday. We planted 10 Crape Myrtle 'Natchez' trees along Central Expressway at the Rengstorff intersection. These particular trees are resistant to the powdery mildew that Crape Myrtles sometimes get. We were replacing some trees that didn't get well established. Ray and Jakob, the official tree experts, gave everyone lots of instructions and kept and eye on everyone to be sure their hole was deep enough, but not too deep. I made this video of the volunteers planting their trees. It only took 1 1/2 to plant all the trees. It's amazing how fast a group of volunteers can make something happen.
Safety vests and gloves were provided and there was hot cider and homemade lemon bread for the volunteers. Some of the people volunteered so that they could learn how to plant trees correctly; others wanted to do something fun and help the community. I love that we live in a community that cares so much about trees.
The city has an Arbor Day Celebration planned for March 9th, 2013 in Pioneer Park from 11 am to 1 pm.
If you have any tree questions, that would be the perfect time to speak to the experts. Or if you want to ask about getting a street tree in front of your home, you can find out if your property is eligible. Ask for Jakob. Although we has lots of tree experts that work for the city, he's the one who purchases the new trees that get planted. He buys everything locally and the trees that we planted on Saturday all came from Boething Tree Land. The flowers along Castro and around the Mountain View Center for the Performing Arts all came from Summer Winds Nursery.
After we had planted all 10 of the Crape Myrtle trees on Saturday, I heard a little boy ask if there were anymore that needed to be planted. Someone told him "no." He was really disappointed that we were finished already. He looked like he wanted to plant trees all day long. He's probably going to grow up to be an arborist. I love Mountain View.
