I’ve always been a fan of comfort food. Scratch on the corner of Castro and California Street has taken comfort food to a whole new level. I think it’s officially referred to ‘California cuisine’ but I call it “high end comfort food” and it’s decadent. I went to lunch with a friend last week because she’s hooked on the grilled cheese sandwiches at Scratch. Let me tell you, they’re not like your mom used to make. And I have the utmost respect for my mother’s cooking, but these grilled cheese sandwiches have super thin slices of apples in them and I wanted to eat half of my friend’s meal! I ordered the Reuben sandwich. It was so big that I took half of it home. It wasn’t a big solid mass of meat, but it was perfect proportions of meat and sauerkraut.. I’m a meat-eater, but not in massive quantities and I love the way Scratch does a Reuben. Old-school traditional lunch, with a few modern twists, a crisp white tablecloth and cold glass of Chardonnay. I love everything this place, from the clean sleek lines of the interior, to the impeccable service, to the items on the menu. It feels so stylish and hip. I just love downtown Mountain View.
