I went to Dittmer's Gourmet Meats and Wurst-Haus last week. It was my first visit to the new store at 4540 El Camino Real in Los Altos. I know, it’s not in Mountain View and the name of this website is “I Love Mountain View.” It was in Mountain View and I’ll always consider it part of our community, regardless of their zip code. If you don’t know the background on this popular family business, here’s a link to a story in the Voice about the fire. I’ve been shopping there for many years and I was thrilled to purchase my favorite items after doing without them for the last year and a half.
Here’s the standard list of items that I buy at Dittmer’s:
- Sheboygan Brats
- Nuremberg Brats
- Semmel Knoedel
- Kartoffel Knoedel
- Red Sauerkraut
- Düsseldorf Mustard
I’ve asked Mark (Dittmer’s son) for advice on how to cook all kinds of different items over the years. He’s always behind the counter, waiting on customers. I remember having a spectacular dinner party for my husband’s boss a long time ago and Mark told me exactly what to cook and how to do it. It was amazing.
And one time he asked me why I had picked up a jar of French mustard to go along with all of the wonderful German food that I had selected to purchase. He firmly corrected me and told me to buy German mustard (Düsseldorf to be exact) or else my meal would be ruined. Customer service with a sense of humor, I really like that.
I must admit that I always look forward to the smell of smoked meat when I enter Dittmer’s and now that they have a new location, it doesn’t have the same intoxicating fragrance upon entering. The old location had been marinating in the smell of smoked meat for many years and the new one has fresh new walls, and floor and paint. I’m sure that in time it will begin to smell as fabulous as the old store. I love that the new store is at least 5 times the size of the old one! And I’m so happy to have them open for business once again. I love Mountain View.
