Incase you haven’t had a chance to stop by the History Center in our Mountain View Library, I wanted to tell you a bit about this incredible facility and the volunteers that run it. It is located on the second floor of the Library. Any questions that you may ever have about the history of our city, the people that lived here, the businesses that operated in its past, from blacksmith shops to stagecoach stops, to what kinds of orchards were once growing in your neighborhood, this is the place to go to find the answers. One of the most popular items in the History Center is the extensive high school yearbook collection. Annuals from Mountain View Union High School from 1904 to 1981 are available to view.
Another reason that people might want to stop by would be to ask when their home was built, who built it and who may have lived in their house in the decades past. Or perhaps you have a question about the Adobe Building, your local church, a specific school, or the names of the streets around town, this is where you can find the answer.
The volunteers that work in the center are usually able to answer all kinds of questions about the history of the businesses all over Mountain View. If they don’t know the answer, they seem to be able to do all kinds of slick detective work to find the answer. I get the feeling that they rather enjoy the challenge of a good question!
The History Center also has numerous newspaper clippings from the 1920 through the 1960s from our local newspaper called the Mountain View Register Leader. Their website has a Mountain View Obituary Database.
Our History Center is operated by volunteers who are members of the Mountain View Historical Association. Betty Ingberg and Barbara Kinchen both graduated from Mountain View High School in 1938 and are a wealth of knowledge and Honor Spitz is the president of the Mountain View Historical Association. Stop by and introduce yourself to these friendly volunteers.
The History Center is open Tuesdays 1:00 - 5:00pm, Wednesdays from 5:00 - 9:00pm and 2nd & 4th Saturdays from 1:00 - 5:00pm.
