Peninsula Bikeway Route

Peninsula Bikeway Route

I love the new Peninsula Bikeway signs that recently went up in Mountain View. They’re friendly and helpful, whether or not you ride a bike, walk or drive.

The signs are meant to designate an interim bike route that connects Redwood City, Menlo Park, Palo Alto, Mountain View, and Atherton, for now.

With over 320 sunny days a year, typical daytime temperatures ranging from 50 to 70 degrees, and relatively flat terrain, the Peninsula is the perfect place to ride a bike. But our current bike networks often do not connect and freeways and major streets are challenging to use or cross on a bicycle.

The Managers Mobility Partnership has come together to help advance the concept of a Peninsula Bikeway that connects four cities and eventually, the entire Peninsula. The signs currently designate an interim route that uses existing bikeways and streets.

The cities involved have all agreed to participate in a collaborative process to identify a high quality, safe, Mid-Peninsula bicycle corridor that traverses the four partner cities. A high-quality bike corridor must be safe, comfortable and efficient, making possible travel for work, school, shopping, errands, and fun. The design concept will consider how to improve intersections, driveway crossings, and other features that will improve active transportation mobility in the region. It will also consider how improvements such as green infrastructure can provide potential complementary benefits in the same corridor.

Here’s a summary map of the bike route, and here’s a detailed map of the route, as it goes through each city.

I’m looking forward to seeing more progress as the program moves forward. I definitely notice more bikes on the designated route. I love Mountain View.
